Yogic Movement

Yogic Movement

Life is movement and life is better when we move skilfully!
The yoga tradition recognises that life is constant movement and action is inevitable. As a practical vision of life, yoga invites us to learn to act and move in the most skilful ways possible, so we can drink deep from the cup of life and play our own small part in leaving this amazing place we call home that little bit better than we found it.

In the world we live in, much of our natural movement has been outsourced. These sessions aim to help us rehabilitate our rich and diverse human movement capacities, so we can enjoy life which is always moving, more fully!

What will we do in these sessions?

  • Standing ‘do anywhere’ Sūrya Namaskāra variations
  • Techniques and sequences to mobilise, fortify and integrate the spine and the joint complexes
  • Learn and practice diverse locomotive patterns for whole system engagement, coordination and conditioning
  • Rehabilitate and encourage efficient natural movement patterns and capacities
  • Cultivate youthfulness and longevity by stimulating neurogenesis through novel and unexpected movements using partner work and movement challenges and situations to invite us into different ways of moving and harnessing our miraculous yet often understimulated movement intelligences and capacities
  • Partner and small group exercises to train sensory reaction time and rehabilitate reflexes
  • Move around in space
  • Practice coordination patterns to engage the brain and senses as we move and tonify the organs and bodily tissues
  • Learn techniques to prepare and ‘prehabilitate’ the joints and spine to help guard against injuries and facilitate easier recovery
  • Shaking, bouncing, ballistic movements

Suitable for all Levels
– Working and playing with scalable, accessible exercises
– Exploring and harnessing yogic principles in diverse movement situations.

Who are you working with:

Growing up playing, and later coaching a range of sports, James has been a lifelong mover. In his twenties, living in Asia, he began exploring yoga, going on to study Sanskṛt and the Indic tradition in depth. All the while he continued to deepen his interest in movement and holistic health. As well as more than twenty years immersed in the yoga tradition, over the last decade James has also worked with some of the movement luminaries of recent times including Ido Portal and Fighting Monkey. James’ approach draws on techniques from many backgrounds but integrates them through the time-tested, robust principles of yoga in ways that make them accessible, scalable and applicable for pretty much anyone who is interested in moving more skilfully, more joyfully and more nourishingly.

James’ movement sessions are about empowering you to deepen your understanding and expand your practice toolkit through experiential learning. We will explore a range of movement practices to nourish the whole human being, always guided by the time-tested principles of yoga: working with the seeming pairs of opposites to draw forth their complementary potential. The emphasis is not on executuing any particular shape or feat, rather we focus on deepening our capacity to inhabit space more easily, working with the body as our lifelong friend and intimate companion.
