New to Yoga

Every Ashtanga yoga practitioner has stepped onto a mat for the very first time and we all remember what it feels like to start something new. With that in mind we give you the support to develop your practice gradually and skilfully.

New to Yoga

How to Start and What Do I Need to Know?

Don’t worry if you’re not flexible. You don’t need to be flexible to start practicing. The teacher can always show you modifications for certain poses and you can use blocks or straps to help you no matter your level. Good foundations (breathing, stability, focus and good alignment are much more important than being able to put your legs behind your head.) Yoga is not stretching. Ashtanga is a dynamic practice and the heat created will help ease tension in the fascia and muscles. The practice also leads to oxygenating every corner of your body. With regular practice, you will gradually gain flexibility, but also strength, endurance and vitality.

You will be taught individually from the start. During your first class, you will learn the breathing technique and a short sequence of postures. Your first practices will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

As you learn and internalize the basics, your teacher will guide you step by step through practice. This way you slowly and safely learn the sequence by heart and develop an ability to concentrate internally.

Mysore setting allows personal teaching, which is ideal for beginners. The common misconception is that Mysore classes are only for advanced students who have already established a regular yoga practice could not be further from the truth. On the contrary, Mysore style class is the best way to start and there is absolutely no need to be intimidated.

All you need is motivation to learn. No preparation is needed, just get started and come as you are. We encourage to commit the minimum of 2-3 times per week in order to embody and to learn the sequence correctly and safely.

Mysore class is not your average yoga class. The classes are taught by highly trained teachers who have dedicated a good portion of their lives to the daily study and practice of Astanga yoga.

Mysore practice offers a highly personalised approach without the cost of a private lesson. Read more about Mysore style Astanga yoga here.

If you have any doubts or feel unsure, you are always welcome to contact the teacher or to speak in person.
